To Infinity and Beyond

Self Fulfilling Prophecy – An expectation that gives rise to behaviors that cause the expectation to become true.

The mastery of the self fulfilling prophecy is the cornerstone to any successful athletes’ practice. Having the ability to carry out effective visualization while maintaining positivity is key in this game, because let’s face it, our belief dictates our behavior.

During a competition, many professional lifters will tell you that they actually lift the weight twice. Once in their mind and once on the platform. The same goes for any successful athlete; one shot in their mind, one shot on the field. If you truly believe that you can accomplish the feat you’ve been training for, chances are, you’ll nail it. Go ahead and tell yourself, “There’s no way I can do this…”, and chances are you’ll flop.

Even if you’ve been having a less than stellar day, you can’t carry that mentality into the gym with you. It’s too much baggage and will not only distract you from your training, but will also cause uncontrollable doubt and negatively affect your performance on a mental level. Leave all negativity at the door. Once you enter the gym, all you need to be concerned about is your workout for that day and how you’re going to conquer it. Outline what you need to accomplish and tell yourself, “I’m going to do this. No questions asked.”. Adopt an ‘outwork’ mentality and don’t settle for anything less. Leave absolutely no room for doubt.

Ultimately, what it comes down to is the wise words of Henry Ford; “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.”. Set yourself up for success in the gym – and in life – by living and swearing by this mentality. Positivity can take you to infinity and beyond.
